Is there a special puller made for a frozen prop, and carrier bearing in order to rebuild lower unit. Does anyone have any thoughts on this straight 6, two stroke. (good or bad) Thanks

Re: Frozen Prop on 1984 115 Merc.

I kinda went through this a few months ago. I tried soaking it for a week or so and pulled up on the prop and hit the shaft with a hammer (nut on shaft) and it wouldn't move. I've heard of people using pullers, but it pulls the prop out of the rubber part and the metal sleeve stays on the prop shaft. I used a torch and burned the rubber out of the prop and pulled it off the sleeve. I then sliced the sleeve with a grinder and chiseled the sleeve off. I think the sleeve is aluminum, and the prop shaft is stainless, I didn't know they would fuse together??....Hope this helps!
BTW, your motor is a good one, tower of power, can't be beat.

The 84-88 115's are the king of motors imho.
They have the greatest power to weight ratio of any outboard made.
To get a seized prop off, you will need to get a jawed gear puller to match your prop. 3 jaws for 3 blades.
Replace the jaws with enough chain to wrap around each blade...
Will probably leave the hub on the shaft and unfortunately getting the prop shop to rehub is almost as much as a new prop so only remove it if you have to...
That motor should be propped to spin at least 5500 wot and should not be lugged around at less than 3000rpm.
My 86 gets its best economy spinning a 19 pitch cupped stainless prop at around 3200rpm where it gets a very respectable 2.45 km/l (Navman chartplotter with fuel computer)
That gets cut in half at or near wot!

Before you get out the puller, dremel etc, try a simpler method. Tilt the motor up all the way. Remove prop nut and spider washer and soak propshaft splines in PB Blaster. Wait a some hours, adding moe oil as you go. Now use a 2X4 to gently pry between the gearcase and prop blades. Rotate the prop to try all blades.

If that fails, the puller is in order.

Thanks for the input. I read that you have couple of glastrons. Originally I started a complete restoration of a 15' 72 glastron, and the 115 merc was going on it. My wife did'nt feel it to be sea-worthy enough for her to go that fast. I got an 84 Imperial from craigs list for $100w/115 merc, and that what I'm restoring now(after I completely gutted the glastron) I've posted a few pics of both train wrecks before I've started on them. If you get time, I'd like see your 72 glastron

I'd hate to ruin a perfectly good s.s. prop, I'm going to try your method before I grab the torch! I did finally get the lower unit off, so I cand let it soak for a month if I need to. Thanks

I would check with a local prop shop, and ask them if you need to melt the hub out of the SS prop, can they install a new one for you. If so, and the 2X4 and the puller fails, the torch is next..... You don't want to melt the seals in the gearcase.

When there stuck bad.... I take lower unit off and place 4x4/4x2 blocks of wood on each side of prop and punch shaft with a brass punch.
