my father in law has a 9.9 yamaha 4-stroke electric start outboard. it has been sitting for about 8 or 9 months, and now when he starts it it will starts and runs great, but as soon as he puts it in gear, it stalls. and when it does stay running it bogs down, and then the rpms will slowly pick up and then it will run fine but if he slows down it will stall. my thinking is that it needs to have a carb cleaning/rebuild, but he is afraid to try it and i dont live near him to do it myself, i told him to take it somwhere but he wants to find out if there is an additive he can put in the fuel to clean the carb similar to what you would use in a car to clean the injectors, i have not heard of anything but i thought maybe someone on here may have. i was not real crazy about putting injector cleaner in the tank. thanks

Re: Fuel Additive

there's really nothing that will do the job properly. The best way to do it is pull the carb apart and clean it. You can try an additive but chances are the problem will return very soon. There is an enzyme fuel treatment called Startron you can use regularly to help with the ethynol in the fuel but that's for use after the carb cleaning. It will not clean the jets in the carb.

Re: Fuel Additive

odds are pretty good that you'll need a carb cleaning, but you could drain the carb, fuel tank, fill with fresh gas and add about 4 ounces of Seafoam for each gallon of gas, run the engine for an hour or 2 and it might clean it out. It's worth a try. Good luck!

Agree...on the SeaFoam!

More than one thread on this site, where SeaFoam cleared the fuel problems.

Easy to try!

Re: Fuel Additive

will it work for this i thought it was for 2-strokes only this is a (4-stroke). also, is that the product the causes the engine to smoke for a little while? if so i think i'll suggest that just as a practical joke!

I only use it my 4 stroke engines...boats, PWC, truck, and cars.

If you add it to the gas tank (follow the directions), there isn't any smoking.

Here is a recent thread, where this fixed an issue:

Re: Fuel Additive

ok, my father in law said he just went ahead and took the boat to a marine mechanic and had the carb. rebuilt as well as the impeller replaced and the usual tune up parts changed. it was running fine at the marina when they started it for him, but when he got it home he said it runs great until he puts it in gear, as soon as he put it in gear fwd or rev, it shuts off. he said he did get it to go into gear and stay running but he had to rev the enging prior to putting it in gear, and then as it would go it would bog down and then rev back up and it seems like its running very hot. i told him to take it back to the mechanic right away! it sounded to me like the carb was out of adjustment and the impeller wasnt working right, he said the tell tale isnt as strong a stream as before so i figured either inproper install or wrong part or somthing is plugged. as i stated before i am in a different state than the vessel so it is hard to help him. anyone have any other thoughts as to what it might be other than what i guessed? thanks
