fuel delivery?

Hello,

I have a 1995 j40teleo electric start tiller. I'm having a problem. At full throttle it suddenly bogs out like it runs out of fuel, yet when it finally starts back up it acts like its flooded and won't allow any throttle up until, I'm assuming, it clears the flood. It will operate fine at idle speed up to 1/3 throttle. I've replaced the ball pump fuel line and checked all fuel feed. Fuel shoots from the "pump" to the lines that feed the carbs. I pulled the plugs and they were fairly wet. This seems so specific I thought someone might recognise the source problem. Any thoughts on the matter would be much appreciated.

Re: fuel delivery?

I've checked out the threads and can't find a definitive source. Could be clogged high speed jet? faulty coil? Bad ground? Anything else?

Will it run full throttle if you pump the fuel bilb?

No. It's getting terribly flooded. I've got spark upon new test today...but don't know if I'm losing it at full bore. What could be the problem for too much fuel?

I've read Bigflathunters posts and am pretty sure it might be the primer solenoid stuck open. Is there a way to bypass it? Or confirm by test?

Re: fuel delivery?

Engine model number J40TLENM. For the first trip out this year, I was having problems getting the motor to start and run well. Unburned gas/oil mix was bubbling up out of the water from the exhaust. So I took it home and rebuilt both carbs with carb kits. Now, I can get it to run (barely), but it is still running way too rich. The amount of smoke is unbelieveable. The smoke is mostly whitish in color (I think). The low speed adjustment screws are adjusted to 1.5 turns out from lightly seated.

I've noticed that the primer bulb will not get hard when pumping it up, and I've looked through the carbs and seen fuel squirting in when I pump the primer bulb when I have the flame suppressor off. I've also noticed that when I push the key in to activate the primer solenoid I do not get a click. The red knob is in line with the solenoid, as shown in the attached picture, so I'm pretty sure it is in auto mode.

I'm thinking the primer solenoid is stuck open, or the needle valve will not close properly due to me not adjusting the float correctly when I reassembled. But, would fuel shoot in through the primer jet when I pump the bulb if the needle wasn't seating?

I did try disconnecting the battery to see if the primer solenoid would close, thinking maybe there was a short in the ignition switch keeping it open. This didn't work either.

Any ideas? I've got the bug, and the warm weather is getting here so I really want to get this problem licked.

Re: fuel delivery?

You should not get a spray of fuel thru the primer nozzle when you pump the bulb. If you are, then the fuel pump is pumping thru the primer also. I can't bring up a photo, turn the lever the other way, and try it.

The primer solenoid closes. I don't know where else to look.

Re: fuel delivery?

When you rebuilt the carbs you replaced the float needle valve, right? Sounds like there is either something obstructing the seal or the floats are not adjusted correctly. Should be parallel to carb body when flipped upside down.

Re: fuel delivery?

That business about the carb rebuild was from another thread I was referencing. I quoted too much from the thread. I was mainly referring to the primer solenoid problem. I am now trying to figure out why it would be getting too much fuel even though the solenoid seems to be functioning.

Re: fuel delivery?

Disconnect the line from the primer solenoid to the carburetor and squeeze the primer bulb to be sure that fuel is not flowing through it.

The more likely problem is that your float valves in the carburetor float bowls are not closing when the bowls fill with fuel, thus flooding the engine.

where is the lever on the primer. should be inline back over the body, another position it will allow excess fuel in. like this pic.

Re: fuel delivery?

good lord. yes position is in auto no flow when pumped, good flow when in manual solenoid clicks and functions properly.
