Fuel dripping from Venturi

My 89 3.0 has been running rich. The carb was just rebuilt. I noticed that after shutdown there was fuel dripping from the Venturi. Other than the float level being too high what else could cause this?

This was happening with mine earlier in the season. After adjusting the float to the correct level, it took care of it right away.

I once had an eyelash sized(I'm NOT exaggerating) piece of threading which found it's way between the needle and seat. Drove me crazy until I pulled it apart and found why my engine was flooding out. Doesn't take much...

Thanks for the quick reply scofflaw. I got he rebuild kit from mikes there were two choices on the float. 1) a normal spring for the needle and 2) a solid bar type piece to replace it. I went with #2 as mikes said the typical spring set up like in a car would starve the engine for fuel on hard turns. I was wondering why they supplied both? Also did I make the right choice going with #2.

Carburetor kits often come with parts for various models. I always replace with same parts. These kits also come with a cardboard gage to set the float height when the cover is upside down, with the float needle set in it's seat. If your float was hanging too low (too high when installed), your float bowl will overfill and may cause a rich mix, or dripping from the venturi.

Maybe some contributor with a 3.0 engine manual will give you the correct float set height in inches if you don't have the kit's gage.

Thanks guys. The stock plastic float had a mark on it to measure the height. The brass float I put in did not. Rebuild kit said to set it where it is level to the gasket.

I got the float reset it was high. I also noticed fuel leaking through the acc pump shaft so it was set way too high. My buddy who rebuilt the carb is going to come give me a hand setting it this weekend. When he rebuilt it he used the solid rod in place of the spring for the needle and seat for the float. That was what was suggested by Mike's carburetor where the kit was purchased. My buddy is thinking that may be a problem. He thinks the rod might be binding up and not allowing the needle to move freely. He is a very experienced carb guy but this is his first marine carb. What do most re builders in the boat world go with the spring or the solid bar? The kit i purchased came with both.
