fuel filter

I bought a 1986 Champion, with a 93 150 Evinrude. I was looking under the back compartment where the batteries and the fuel tank are, and I found the gas filter separator. I think that is what it is. It has a filter that looks like a oil filter. Ok, I has a inlet and two outlets on it. The line coming from my tank is hooked to one of the outlets and the line going to the motor is coming from the other outlet. There is nothing hooked to the inlet. Is this right? It runs good, but is it filtering the gas? Can anyone help me?

Re: fuel filter

It is a water separator. The line from the tank should be connected to the inlet, but water separators do not actually filter water out they mostly separate because water is heavier than gas.
You can take it off and empty it out. There probably is some water in it. Then you can connect it the way it is supposed to be.

Re: fuel filter

Hook it up correctly and it should work properly.

Re: fuel filter

The filter isn't hooked up right, the gas is bypassing the filter altogether. Unscrew the plug at the inlet and remove the hose from the tank to the outlet and install it to the inlet, then install the plug to the unused outlet.

Re: fuel filter

You might try and see if you can get one with a clear glass/plastic bottom that also has a tap on it.
these are miles better as you can see the water being collected in the bottom and simply drain into a cup or bowl and
then just discard the water etc.
DEFINITELY change to the inlet from the tank, like said above, its doing nothing like that apart from maybe collecting
a small amount of water instead of all of it.

Below is a pic of mine with a plastic bottom and a plastic tap for draining off the rubbish/water.
mine has 2 inlets and 2 outlets, but they are all pretty similar and do work good when fitted right.

Re: fuel filter

Better to replace the filter, no telling the condition of the filter elements. Since very little gas was circulating they may have a slug of loose crap when the fuel flows normal.

Re: fuel filter

Take a look at the arrows on the ports. A lot of times a pair of ports on the same side are 1 inlet and one outlet. The other two ports will be plugged. There are two sizes of water seperators. One is for Merc (large hole) and one for Johnnyrude (smaller hole). The Merc ones seem to be more popular. Make sure you get the right size.

Re: fuel filter

For sure measure the threaded hole diameter before you buy. The two holes are noticeably different so a simple scale will do the job. Pay no attention to the two makes (Merc or Rude/Johnson)they are the same except for the hole size.

Are you using the arrows to tell inlet from outlet?

Re: fuel filter

No, the inlet says inlet and the outlet says outlet. I just could not understand why it was not hooked to the inlet.

Re: fuel filter

I hooked it up properly, after replacing the filter. Had a hard time pumping up the bulb, could not so I took it to the lake and started it, seems to run at idle just fine. I never unloaded it. Thanks

Re: fuel filter

so many people fit the filter the wrong side of the fuel bulb !!!!!!!!!!!!!

it be tank --bulb--fuel filter---engine.

if the fuel bulb is placed after filter it can cause hard bleeding of the filter !!!!!!!!!
