fuel gauge inoperable

Not sure this is where to post this question....

My fuel gauge quit working. I've got 12v from the ignition to ground and 5v from the sender to ignition. This would indicate to me that I should have a little less than half a tank. This makes sense based upon my last fishin trip where I burned alot of fuel.

Does this mean that the gauge is bad? It's getting power to the gauge and the sending unit resistance is dropping the voltage at about the level it should be.

I just want to check prior to buying a new gauge.

thanks -

wishniwasfishn

If you connect an ohm meter (power disconnected) to the sender leads, you should see the meter needle sweep as you move the float arm up and down.

If that checks out, it's the guage.

Re: fuel gauge inoperable

THere have been lots of posts here on this problem, just do a search for fuel guage.

A quick check - disconnect the sender wire you should have full deflection (either full or empty, I forget which). Then short the sender to ground. Guage should go the other way all the way.

If it does, look at the sender. If not, look a the guage.
