Fuel Gauge Tempermental

My fuel gauge is tempermental. It only works occasionally. I checked the wires and connectors for loose connections and they all appear OK. The fuel gauge when it's not working always goes to the past full line. If I wiggle the wires on the back of the fuel gauge, the needle bounces back and forth between the full line and the empty line. My one tank is about half full and the other is about a quarter full. The gauge is tied into my switch that allows me to switch from one tank to another. This has problems switching tanks as well as whenever the gauge is not working as well. So I don't think it's a sending unit cause the problem happens with both tanks not to mention the gauge moves when I wiggle the wires. Thanks for any help.

Did you tighten up the nuts on the studs where you wires are terminated on the back of your gauge?

Are you talking about the studs and nuts that secure the gauge to the dash? If so yes those are tight.

He means check the nuts that hook each wire to the gauge and make sure thoes are tight so its making proper contact. If they are loose then just make them snug and that might fix your issue.

Yes they are tight. And I replaced all of the connectors already just incase they were loose. So that is not the problem.

Sounds like the send is getting grounded when it spikes past full.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe this may be where your problem is located, in the transfer switch. It switches tanks and sends fuel gauge readings to same gauge, both tanks give same symptoms, so this is the common denominater. Never hurts to check anyways!

Yes I believe the problem is related to the switch to switch the tanks. But I don't what I need to check to diagnose and figure out where the problem is? And why does the gauge move when I wiggle the wires on the back of the gauge, yet when I wiggle the wires on the back of the switch nothing happens?
