fuel leaking in water!!

Hey all, I have a 1996 evinrude 130hp and everytime its idling I notice a sheen of fuel in the water. I checked the hoses and didn,t find any leaks. it looks like the fuel is coming out of the exhaust. what could be wrong to cause that?? I don,t know a lot about outboards so I probally won,t be able to fix it myself, Im mostly trying to get an idea of what the problem could be before I call a mechanic, I really don,t want to spend much on this old O.B.. I may just but a new one..... Thanks for any help at all!!!

Is this a new outboard to you, or has it just started outputting more oil/fuel than normal? If this is new to you, 2 strokes leave a sheen on the water. That is their nature, without getting too deep into it. Quite normal. You would notice by the performance of the motor if you had a fuel leak or air leak.

As mentioned it may be normal. Check out the prices of a new 130hp and you may change your mind. The 130 is a great motor with lots of torque as I have one the same year and love it.

probably normal, they do not burn all the fuel, and oil at idle, it goes out the exhaust. by they way a 96 is a tween, 86 is a teen, 76 adult, 56 mature. there are plenty of the mature motors still going strong.

I,ve had the O.B. for about 5 years and never noticed a sheen in the water before. but maybe it is normal, I,ve never really let it idle for long before, so I guess its possible that it always did it. I was actually worried that I could get a ticket for it if the DNR saw it.

Don't worry about it. If DNR gave tickets for such things they would have a hay day at any of the local marinas.

David, If the fuel pump has a hole in the diaphram, raw fuel will get into the exhaust.

Is the fuel pump and the VRO pump the same thing? I disconected the wires on my VRO a couple years ago because the no oil alarm kept going off.

Fuel pump is part of the VRO system.

Sorry about asking all these dumb questions, but is there any way I could test it to see if its the diaphram thats the problem (if there is a problem), or do I have to gamble and buy a new VRO? I don,t even have a oil tank anymore, when I disengaged the VRO wires, I removed the oil tank from the center console and put two trolling motor batteries in its place. I,ve been adding oil to my gas tank ever since

Dave, Pull off the pulse line on the vro and on the vapor pump, if you have one(some models have both pumps). Pump the primer bulb, and if fuel leaks out of the pulse line(s), the daighram is bad.

Thanks for the help!!
I looked around for anything that looked like a pulse line and couldn,t find anything, but I did run the O.B. in my back yard and put a bucket under the prop. I only ran it for a couple minutes and there was a good amount of gunk in the bucket. Does this look normal?? notice the fuel in the water and the oil caked on the sides of the bucket? some of the fuel looks spent but some of it looks fresh (the pic doesn,t show the rainbow like color on the top of the water to well).

You can help with the sheen on the water by using a biodegradable 100% TCW-3 synthetic oil. The engine will run cleaner, less carbon, less plug fouling. Great for the environment.
