Wow, finally got this '86 merc 150 running! I went through hell getting this thing started. Ended up having bad gas.

Anyway, I replaced the fuel tank, filter and line. I installed 1/4'' line because that's what was on there, but the repair manual I purchased stated 3/8 or 5/16 fuel line is suppose to on there.

The engine sounds like it runs kind of rough, lot's of smoke coming out (smells like fuel), I expected this with a two stroke. I just want to be sure.

What do you guys think?

Re: Fuel line size

5/16 is ok, 3/8 is better neither will cause a problem at idle. Some V/6 engines are smokie at idle if it don't clear up you probably have a inlet needle leaking

Re: Fuel line size

If the fuel line is too small it will run fine till you get up in the range of WOT for an extended run and it will choke down......backing off the throttle a couple thousand rpm's and it will run ok tells you that you are fuel starved and need the larger hose.

For a 150 I would run at least a 3/8".

Get some Sea Foam and do a decarb or put it in your fuel for awhile and the smoking should go away in addition to some like new stellar performance.

For decarb, go to search on the site and look for it.

For the laid back cleansing (which I did on all the stuff I decarb'd), I put like a pint to 6 gal, then on the next 6, half pint, and next 6....1/4 pint, and by then she is purring like a Siamese kitten in heat.........in what? Then I run like 4 oz per 6 gal just to keep the critters out.
