My 18' Party Barge with a 75hp 4 stroke Merc holds 37 gallons of gas. I drive it until I hit about 1/4 tank, then fill it up again. I'm having way too much fun to calculate my gallons per hour. Same riding the Harleys, have no idea what the fuel mileage is. My F150 gets 14.5mpg, the little read-out on the dash says so, otherwise I wouldn't know that one either. If I was driving a Toyota Carolla I'd figure it out, have to have some reason for driving that piece of crap.

Kind of the way i feel--What difference does it make?

Was just figuring out how far I can travel on the fuel loads I can carry. Many places I boat are very limited in available fuel stops on the water. Otherwise I really don't care either...just nice trivia I guess...

Makes sense :)
Guess i'm just used to what i can do for how long with the 13gals i start out with--

I like to know, so I won't run out of gas and/or when to switch tanks before running out of gas. My Yamaha is pretty hard to start when you let it run out of gas. We don't want to be stranded either. So I know the gph and keep up with the running time and gph for speed time

That is the SOP for my Yamaha. I run on one tank until it runs out and then switch to the other. Never had a problem starting as long as I squeeze the primer bulb until it is hard.

I think my problem was using the choke as well as squeezing the primer bulb. I am pretty sure I was flooding it. Are you suppose to close the gas tank vent cap as well as squeeze the bulb? I have tried several ways. Not sure if I did the choke bit until I couldn't get it to start other wise. But still, you have to make sure you have enough hours left on the last tank of gas so you can get home

No need to use choke, just prime and go. The vent has nothing to do with priming but it should be open when using that tank.
As soon as I hear the motor sputter I imediately shut off the engine and switch tanks....don't try to get every drop out of it or it will be hard to start.

All the manufactures have data on rpms vs fuel consumption on their motos. If the data shows 8 gph at 5000 rpms and you know you run say 20 mph at 5,000 rpms, then you can easily calculate the fuel economy for example.

Agree that ^^^^ with the understanding that the published fuel use is based on a linear load straight up from idle. Very consistent with a propeller, but more consistent with say a water pump for irrigation. The point is that a manufacturer can't say where that line is on a planing hull as it climbs over the bow wave. Before climbing the bow wave (displacement), easy. After climbing the bow wave (planing), easy. During the transition it gets weird, and depending on the hull could be at a different point. Yes, I know we are talking a 'toon, and it is different yet again.

What you illustrate is also consistent with another point I often try and make (poorly). GPH is almost meaningless without speed. You have to have speed to make the data useful.

Thanks for the info!

Re: Fuel mileage on your Toon

Our old 24' twin toon with a Yamaha 115 hp motor would get 4.5 mpg @ 20 mph. I always kept a 6 gallon second tank as a backup to the 12 gallon plastic Moeller portable tank.

Our new Bennington 24' trihull with a Yamaha 150 hp 4 stroke gets about 4 mpg at a normal cruise. I'm not used to having a gas gauge. We find ourselves going farther away from home with the new boat.

I always keep a cell phone in case I've got to call a neighbor to bring me some gasoline.
