What sort of ill side effects can result from having too rich of a fuel mixture? I know it will smoke excessively but can it do any harm to the motor?

You'll loose a little on the top end and be dumping more raw gas and oil into the lake. <br /><br />If you're not fouling plugs and loading up at low RPM's then your fine except for the extra unnecessary pollution. Better to be a little rich then to lean.
