Stick to the 24:1 (or 25:1) mix on that engine. That's what it was designed to use. Cut down and you risk problems.

Fuel/Oil mix

Hi all! I have just brought back from the dead a 1962 Evinrude 10hp Sportwin. I got it as a complete but non runner. To cut a very long story short, it is now funning just fine, BUT, what is the correct fuel/oil mixture for this engine. I have been running it at 32:1, but it seems very smokey. I have also seen a suggested 40:1 mix, and have been told by an outboard mechanic (who supplied the replacement parts) to run it at 50:1. Who is right? The last thing I want to do is seize my baby up!

25 to 1 is what the factory recommended when it was built, is the carb adjusted right

Re: Fuel/Oil mix

Laddies, I only ran it for 5 mins after the rebuild, before that, it hadn't been run for about 12 months, so I guess that a) it was cold, and b) there was still quite a fair bit of crap in the cylinders etc which would need burning off. The carb was set thus; slow running jet +1 turn from 'shut', and the high speed jet +1.5 turns from 'shut', so I guess that wouldn't have been too far from the mark.
