Fuel overload 89 johnson 70 hp

1989 -johnson-70 hp- j70tlcem- start up ruff idle,sounds like it it choking-when i lower the lever it dies. unhook gas to let run out, almost out of gas starts to idle just fine,hook gas back up while idleing good and put in gear,runs like scalded dog,slow down and put in nuetral loads right back up . have checked for water in fuel-negative-ran fine weeks before. changed plugs and this is what igot when i went to river. checked plugs- looked fine. please help me.THANK YOU

Does the fuel primer bulb hold firm when after you have pumped it firm and engines off?
Could be leaking fuel into carb and flooding it

I have a 1993, 70hp Johnson that does the same thing, has been doing it for a year or two. We took it to a certified boat mechanic last year and he did a link-n-sync, changed the plugs and charged well over $100.00 and it still does it this year. Ours, just like yours, runs like a scalded dog, wide open, but it loads up at idle, so bad it makes it hard to drive on the trailer. I know what I've said is not any help, but if you find your problem, let me know what it is and I will do the same. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone with this probem.

Have you tried to pull off the three primer hoses off the carbs? Maybe the primer solenoid is leaking.

noticed extra fuel runing down motor when i pulled out, took off cover of carbs and fuel is running out of # 2 carb when i pump ball,is tis normal.?

No, not normal. #2 carb probably has a leaking float valve.
