Hi, I have a 1963 Evinrude Speeditwin 28 hp. Got it serviced for $300 . Took it out on the water on Friday. Tried starting it up and it took to many times and then fuel was pouring out of the carb and the motor was bouncing all over the place. Anyone have any suggestions? Is this motor worth keeping? Please respond!! Thanks ;)

Needle valve stuck open due to misadjusted carb.

Is this something we can do? My husband is mechanically inclined and we were debating to bring it to a shop to get looked at but we have already put $300.00 in it!

Sounds like the float is not closing the needle valve into the needle seat. That would cause fuel to run out of the carb. Its not getting enough gas and running lean. I have no idea where you could get a carb kit for a motor that old, but one of the wise men on this board could probably point you in the right direction. You could always take it off and take the float bowl off, inspect the needle vavle and seat, if all looks well reinstall, turn carb upside down, float should probably be level with the carb when closed. Some older model motor's float set different, maybe at a slight angle. A carb kit would indicate how the float should set and how much drop it should have.

There was a lot done to the motor! So thanks for the wise remark! Anyways, we messed with the needles and it runs perfect! We were out on the boat on Monday and had a blast! :p

Shame you had to spend that kind of money when you had to finish the job yourself.

Amen to to jonesg reply , your year model is not that old . i think that it could also be the needle valve or the float itself. when both of those have been replaced and adjusted correctly i would look closely at the coils or power pack.

Why is it a shame to have spent the money? We got the motor free! It was sitting for a long time and had to get some stuff done to it. We are the ones that messed up the needles and we fixed it! Not a big deal. Just asked a simple question and got a couple responses and tried it and it worked! Do you realize how much you pay an outboard mechanic an hr? The people we went to gave us a discount for paying cash and threw a bunch of things in for free. They are good at what they do and it was our own fault. I'm happy :D and that's all that matters!

If you didn't pull the carb, you got lucky. The float was stuck allowing constant excessive fuel flow.
Maybe transporting/tinkering with the carb jarred it loose. Keep it in the back of your mine just in case it happens again. If it does, pull the carb and inspect the float assembly.

The float level may not have to be adjusted. It may just be sticking. At least pull the bowl off first to check it. If it's not sticking then it's needs adjustment. Check the needle valve to to make sure it's in good shape.
