i have a 71 johnson 60hp and have been having trouble getting it started so i checked spark and it seemed to have spark but and compression is good but i was trying to make sure it had fuel getting to it so i pulled the out line on the fuel pump and squeezed the bulb and it came out then i hooked it back up and tried to see if fuel was getting to the carbs so i unscrewed the the bowl plugs to see if anything would come out and the top carb had fuel but the bottom two didnt have anything so i pumped the bulb some more and it started overflowing out the top carb but what i dont understand is the fuel from the pump goes into the middle carb first and then out to the other two but it and the bottom have nothing what could be the problem do they need rebuilt or is that normal?

Re: fuel problems

You may have a stuck inlet needles in the other two carbs. The fuel has to pass thru the inlet valve before it gets into the bowl so it could come out of the drain plug you took out. I would consider removing and cleaning all 3 carbs.

Re: fuel problems

well i pulled the middle carb off and pulled the float needle and its all new i guess it had been rebuilt before i bought the motor because it was clean along with everywhere else i could get to and the gasket was new but i did notice that the needle was sticking a little when i turned the carb right side up and let the float drop a little the needle stayed in there at first and after i played with it a minute it would start dropping down but i think were the tip of it is rubber it was causing it to stick is it normal for the tip to be made of rubber i havent pulled any of the other carbs i will do that tomorrow when i have more time and light.

Re: fuel problems

MERC1877,
If I were you, I would by three rebuild kits off of Ebay which I did for my new to me 70 horsepower Johnson outboard and redo all those carbs to give you piece of mine and you know you did them right. They are extremely easy to do. I went to Advance Auto Parts in town and bought the 1 gallon paint can of Carbuetor parts cleaner and soaked my carbs one at a time, took them out poked copper wire from an old extension cord, advice from TASHASDADDY, and pished threw the jets, and blew 120 PSI compressed air threw the jets and all passageways and my motor runs like a brand new one and I also did my 88 SPL V-4 which she runs awesome after the rebuild. If I lived close by you I would be more than glad to show you how to do them myself as long as you bought the carb kits. The only thing that is critical about the carb rebuild and that isn't to big of a deal is the float adjustment. Make sure that you adjust the float so that it is perfectly level with the carb body float bowl area with the carb upside down then when you have that adjusted correctly then you turn the carb righside up and adjust the float level drop at 3/4 of an inch then put it all back together according to the instructions and put them on. Then when there back on pump the bulb up until firm to check for leaks. I did this on my 70 Johnson and the main fuel line from the fuel pump was leaking somewhat so I had to replace that line and after I did that no more leaks. Let me know Bob:)
