Fuel Pump check valve removal procedure FINAL RESULT

Can anyone tell me how to remove the check valve at the fuel OUT side of the fuel pump? I can drift out the one that sits on the fuel IN side and, of course, the center one removes with two screws.

My reason for removing them is that they all are sticking and won't free up by cleaning with chemicals. It appears that the amber colored plastic poppet has expanded (maybe from ethenol fuel?) and the spring does not have enough power to pop them back.

I was able to play with the removable valve and could see plainly that the plastic did grab on the "cage" legs. I was able to slightly bend the legs on the center valve a hair and this freed up the poppet.

I believe this is the cause of my intermittant running lean and shutting off. It seems logical as some times, I wasn't able to get the ball hard even after the carbs were rebuilt and diaphram was replaced.

I'm thinking that I can break the poppet section of the OUT valve, make a threaded 'J' hook and, using a plate across the pump body, screw a nut on the "j" shaft to pull the valve out. I have a arbor press for pressing in the new valves.

If anyone has any better Ideas, I would love to hear them.

Regards,

John

I dont think you can get that one out without damaging it. Buy three new ones and new gaskets then use a deep socket like 3/4 inch to pound them back in. Valve is 5 bucks part number 21-F177330. Gasket part number is 27-F84792 at 60 cents each. Parts can be purchased at Mercury.

Thanks for your input. I have the new parts, I was just fishing for ways of removing the OUT valve without damaging the housing.

BTW, using an arbor press (available from Harbor Freight Tools for about $29, is a safer way to install the valves. Pounding on a socket may crack the aluminum casting.

If anyone else wants to attempt this, heating the pump housing with a hair dryer and then putting an ice cube on the brass of the valve facilitates their removal without too much stress to the aluminum pump housing.

To All:

My idea of a puller did not work. The OUT check valve was pressed in too tight and the pullers that I made broke even after tempering them. I then tried to tap the valve and use a slide hammer. This didn't work as the brass was too soft and the threads pulled out.

Finally, I used an easy out made for soft wall tubing. Not the spiral type but the type with four tapered sides. I tapped this in and wedged it at an off angle about 30 degrees. Then I turned and pulled at the same time. The offset angle allowed the easyout to get a bite on the valve but it still slipped off a few times. The end result was the valve was removed but was destroyed in the process. There was no damage to the pump housing.

Hopefully my new valves and gaskets will be here as promised tomorrow.

Regards,

John
