Fuel Pump leak, what did I do wrong?

Hi all, I am the guy with the 1972 Seaking (chrysler) 20 hp that had so much trouble with it last summer. Anyway, with lots of help from here and some from a friend we got it up and running. It is starting great, just choke the cold motor once and it bust right off, (been catching the heck out of the crappie around here). But it was running real rough at full throttle, so in my infinite wisdom (yeah right) I decided the fuel screen was fouled.

So I got out my manual and learned the right way to remove the screen. Trouble was it was easier to remove the fuel pump cover to get to the screen. So I removed the fuel pump cover and the reed plate, diaphram, and gaskets fell into my hands. I am sure I put it back on like it came, but it is leaking fuel badly. The manual doesnt say anything about gasket sealant so I am wondering if I did something wrong?

Back to the original problem of running rough at full throttle it seems to me now as if it was starving for gas. It was winter when we finally got it running and too cold to check under power so we just adjusted the needle 1 1/2 turns off bottom and called it good. Do I need to richen the mixture some by adjusting the needle/seat? I wish I had done this first but wanted to check the screen anyway (it was clean as a whistle) so now what do I do to stop the leak?

Thanks for the help.

OK My manual shows a diaphram closest to the pressure port. Then the reed plate I assume the plate has a gasket on each side.If it is leaking at the plate then it would seem the gaskets are in wrong or damaged if it leaks at the diaphram the it may be pinched or cut or torn.If over tightened it may have split.I suppose the pump housing may have cracked as well if over tightened or installed wrong.

It was easier than that; I took it off yesterday and found I had bent one of the gaskets when installing, but it was probably a blessing in disquise. After changing gaskets and installing the motor would only run about 10 seconds and then speed up like when you are draining the carb and then it would die. A few pumps on the prime bulb and it started right back, only to die again. A call to Franz suggested the diaphram was going out, he told me to crank it and pump the prime bulb and see if it ran. I did; it ran like a top as long as I primed it, so I ordered a new diaphram and gasket set. I am pretty sure that was why it was cutting out at high speed, the diaphram was going bad and fortunately gave out in my yard instead of across the lake with a basket full of crappie in the bottom of the boat.

Thanks for the assist,
