Fuel pump output

I just changed over from VRO to a standard fuel pump. I saw a post here that said the standard pump won't pump enough volume of fuel to run the engine.
True? The pump I installed on an 89 40hp Johnson recreation model is the same pump a 40hp commercial engine uses so why would it not be ok on mine?
I took the VRO off because I was not getting enough fuel flow and figured that I was also not getting enough oil flow so better to be safe than sorry I put in a regular fuel pump.
I've been mixing gas and oil for 45 years and never had a problem with an engine caused by lack of lube, the VRO might be a good idea but I just don't trust it.
Anyway, is there any reason a standard fuel pump wont work on my Johnson 40?

Jakers, The fuel pump will work fine. We convert all the motors back to them when we overhaul the motors. The pumps seem good for 5-7 years but replacement cost is pretty high, $230.00 retail.

Re: Fuel pump output

The high cost of a replacement VRO pump was a big part of my decision to change over. Another reason was just lack of trust in the pump..
I can look at the oil pressure guage in my truck and get some idea of whats happening, on a VRO the only way I knew of to check the oil flow was put a mark on the tank and check it every so often to see if I was using oil. Seems to me that by the time I figured out that the engine was not getting enough oil I would have found out by having to paddle in with a shot engine.
I'm glad to hear that the standard pump should work out ok given that I have already stripped the VRO components and installed the standard pump and the engine is running just fine on a muff. I hope it does as well on the water.
Thanks for the help.
