Fuel Pump white indicator on 70 horse Johnson outboard?

Good morning everyone, Hope your having a good Forth of July 2010. Anyway, I took my pontoon boat out yesterday but had a little bit of a hard time cranking her over at first time of the day, but besides that it ran o.k. Today, this morning, I went out to pump the primer bulb and she got pretty hard and I saw no leaks of any kind anywhere from the black silencer box or around any of the fuel lines coming from the fuel pump or any where. I did notice on the back of the fuel pump there is a white tiny thing that sticks out once I pump the primer bulb and when I crank the engine over it retracts back in. What does that tiny white indicator mean when it sticks out and then retracts in? Is it normal for that tiny white indicator on the back of the fuel pump stick out when priming the fuel bulb up and then retract in? Anyway, once I saw this I took all three spark plugs out and cranked it over to see if maybe the float needles was not shutting fuel off to one of the carbs and seeing if fuel was spraying out one of the spark plug holes when I cranked the engine over and no fuel was spraying out and no fuel was leaking down the lower leg unit at all. My question is do you think I have a problem with the fuel pump since that tiny white indicator sticks out on the back of the fuel pump once I pump up the primer bulb and then it retracts back in as soon as I crank the engine over? Let me know what you think?

Could you post your model#, would like to look at the parts breakdown of the fuel pump and see if it shows anything.

Daviet,
Sorry about that. The model of my motor/outboard is J70ELCTE. Let me know because it has my thinking. Thank you very much, Bob

Well, it's a 1983, but the parts breakdown for the fuel pump don't show anything about a white indicator.
Maybe some will come along and be able to ansewer your question.

not an indicator, just part of the pump, circled in the repair kit pictured below. The disk end is is spring loaded to keep tension on the diaphram and the stick end pokes out a hole on the back of the housing. If the diaphram gets perforated, gas will dribble out through that hole.

Whether it's in or out, might appear kind of random, but the pump is behaving normally.

You don't mention symptoms apart from hard cold start?
spark plugs in good shape, choke/enrichener working properly, battery fully charged.....

JTexas,

O.K. then. I guess I am being paranoid. So it sounds like the white thing on the back of the fuel pump is suppose to stick in or out or both some times, o.k. then I will let it go and say it is good to go. Hey, what about the idle RPM's. I have it out of gear in idle and this is in the water, and have it idling at 1200 to 1300 RPM's is that o.k.? and when I drop it in gear or push the throttle handle forward it goes down to about 800 to 850 rpm's. does that sound o.k. to all of you? Thank you, Bob :)

I wouldn't call it paranoid. Following up on symptoms soon as they appear is the way to go. It's not like a car you drive every day, where you can see what it's like tomorrow or next day. Hard cold start is usually related to choke (or in your case, enrichener). But if the battery was down a bit from a few weeks of disuse, that would affect only the first cold start of the weekend.

Mine ('79 vintage) idles around 800 RPM in gear in the water, neutral 950-1000, which is in line with the OEM manual for that year. It's closer to 1200 on the muffs. You generally want to avoid shifting at over 1000 RPM, to minimize stress on the gears.

Does your motor have adjustable slow speed needle valves?
When was your last carb rebuild?
