fuel, spark...small fire, no start....

Hello again. I am resurrecting volvo penta 125b, I was going bonkers with the carburator fitting (I posted some earlier)...I was questioning the fiiting (was getting a small 'spray' around it, you all suggested I replace screw (hollow) and washer)....got the new one via fedex, put it on still spray, small fire when I tried to start it (spark from starter), was prepared for that and extinguished it quickly.....I have a SECOND engine that was given to me...I didn't want to take the carb off of it (breaking this so important fitting 'seal'), but after looking at original I see a VERY slight gap on fitting (probably result of cross thread and not "SEATING" right)....ok, so now I have replaced carb with the one from the second engine....I now can FLIP/WORK the throttle lever (on side of carb) and actually see fuel spraying down inside the carb.....but still no singing from the engine....she'll crank...not even a hint of wanting to start....

I have read some post on ALIGNING MARKS....there is a small 'DOT' indentation on two wheels (belted wheels) on the front of the engine. Is there some meaning to these? are they suppose to be in line with something and if not won't start?

thanks

If you download the manual from the adults only sticky at the top of the I/O forum, in the Volvo info page, it explains how to line up the timing belt. Have a look and post back if your still confused.:)
Here's a link in case you can't find it.

It sounds like your accelerator pump is working anyway.

Are you sure you have spark? Have you installed new points and condenser? Cap and Rotor?

Thanks captmello, yes I have spark, I can't describe the 'color' of the spark, if I had to guess I would say, yellowish. I have not replaced any points or such. I found a replacement distributor on ebay and put it in. I do see on the manual you linked me with (thanks) that there is a specific "alignment" of the rotor and directional (something about cy 1)....I do see on the manual info about these DOTS (indentations) on the wheels, and that there is some alignment with belt markings (?).....Do remove flywheel and re-adjust or re-adjust belt....thats where get confused? thanks

So, how did you go about installing the new distributer.

With all due respect do you know what I mean by points? I'm sensing your a novice with these engines.

Anyway, these engines have a lot of variables that need to set up just right for the engine to run and perform correctly.

-you must have fuel. It sounds like your getting some fuel.
-you must have spark. It sounds like your getting spark, but it must be at the right time. This is adjusted at the distributer.
-you must have the correct valve timing. This is controlled by the timing belt.
-you need compression. valves and piston rings working together.

How many of these factors do you feel confident in knowing they are correct/good/set?
