Fuel splashing from tank vent on stern

Whenever I fill up the 35 gal tank on my inboard Bayliner, the only way I know it's near full is a sudden spray of fuel that comes out of the vent fitting on the transom. The fuel nozzle doesn't auto-shutoff, so I don't have any warning.
Is there any sort of check valve that I can install on that vent hose to stop fluid but still allow proper venting? What about installing a valve that I can close on this line until the tank is full, then open it up? The fitting is about two feet higher then the level of the tank, and I can't locate it much higher. I am getting plenty tired of wiping my wax job off with every fill up...

The original layout should work...?

Just an idea (after you've checked that the hose is still intact and arranged as it's supposed to):

People selling fittings for heating purposes also sell auto-vents that allow air to pass but shuts off liquids.

There are devices available that "catch" the spillage and temporarily attach to your vent.

Check out www.westmarine.com
