I have just bought my first boat and am in the process of going thru everything. In draining the fuel tank ( Johnson Mile master 6 US gallons)I came accross about a cup of grit. Having never dealt with fuel tanks before I come here before I started tearing it apart to get the do's and dont's. such as what kind of material should I use to replace the gasket, should I put some kind of sealer on the inside of the tank any other pertinate information would be appreciated.

Not sure what a milemaster tank is, but my johnson dealer sells gas tank parts including the gasket.

dd- if the tank is in good shape (no rust), remove(four screws) the gauge and float from the tank and put some washers, bolts and nuts into the tank with some gas or other solvent. Now swish them around until the gunk is mixed with the solvent and you can pour it out. Repeat if necessary. That should clean it out. Reassemble the tank with a new gasket if necessary.

Re: fuel tank restoration

I used a wire brush on the end of a flexible drive, with the tank dismantled there's just enough of a hole to get your hand and the brush in there. After emptying out the loose rust I finished off by pouring rust remover gel into the tank and swilling it around then rinsing out.
You can then seal the inside with epoxy resin if you want, I'm not sure it's really neccessary though and I didn't do it.
Service kits are available for these tanks so you don't need to make a new gasket and shouldn't need to use sealer either.

what chris1956 said works pretty well, i have used rocks from the side of the road about two handfulls and a little bit of gas and shook the crap outof the tank (holes covered) makes the inside all nice and shiny. works well for radiator bottles too
