Re: Fuel Tank

most tanks are sealed below the floor. you have to cut the floor area out above tank and patch and re glass the floor.. but i am not familiar with your boat.. if your asking about unscrewing the entire floor.. well it should be glassed to the sides of the hull as well. or i would think it should. mine is, but i have a chapparrel. i think you will find that folks are going to reccomend cutting a section of floor out.. i WISH the manufacturers would have made a removable acess door to fuel tanks below the deck.. they should realize that those things will not be problem free for infinity. eventully you have to get to them. can i ask why you need to acess yours? maybe we can offer solutions to help you. we really dont have much info to advise on. leak? tank replacement?

I siphoned about 5 gallons of water out yesterday. I am going to keep cleaning and run some fresh fuel and filters along with some Seafoam and Pray I do not have issues. I have a 25 gal. Aux tank for emergency.

Re: Fuel Tank

looks like you removed your deck plate after all. There are lots of quality or well-made boats that do not have a solid floor like Chaparal described (let me guess--i/o bowrider with carpet and lots of padded seats?).

But even with the floor deck up it's not always easy to remove the tank. the foam blown in is a big problem. My key west was the first model year and they miscalculated and you couldn't take the tank out--had to chop it up, which is the solution for a shot tank anyway.

Per Bond-o's comment, work on that surface and if there are no holes, prime and paint with the correct paint for aluminum. Mine leaked at the bottom; some from the top corners and edges, so inspect those areas especially where the tank might be rubbing against a frame member.

hopefully all you have to do is drain and clean. replace the anti-syphon valve with a straight-through fitting and run the hose out the bilge drain hole, then use the bulb to get a syphon going. Then there are lots of posts around here for cleaning the tank.

Mine leaked at the bottom; .

I hope mine is not leaking at the top. I know it is not leaking at the bottom. When I siphoned the water yesterday it was fresh water. "How do I know you ask?" I did it the ole fashion way. I sucked on the hose and got a good mouthful. Fresh water with just a hint of fuel bouquet. I do not know how long it has been since it had fuel in it but I am hoping that since it was fresh water it is just condensation.

Tanks out. Does anyone know where to get a bladder or a 70 gallon plastic? Any suggestions? I do not want to go any smaller than what came out

Re: Fuel Tank

I don't know how good they are, but there is a bunch of tanks for boats on ebay, I think I'm going to get me a replacement tank there when I'm ready to replace mine..And a lot cheaper then most places..

Re: Fuel Tank

You can get 'off the shelf' plastic or aluminum tanks up to 55 gallons, which is pretty close to what you have.

You will have to be sure about the dimensions so that the tank will fit into the fuel bay easily.

Otherwise, you are going the custom route, for which I would recommend aluminum. Expect to pay about $700 for a new tank. I would not buy a used tank because they came out of a boat for a reason, and you probably do not want to find out what the reason was.

Re: Fuel Tank

I have two 45 gallon saddle tanks, also of the '88 vintage. I was told that aluminum tanks life span is about twenty years so i am replacing both. I chose to not continue replacing filters and stressing over fuel color and sediments. Spent $200 on a professional to "polish the fuel and clean the tank". What a joke. Still had weird contamination and granular sediments. I'm going with the Moellar under deck tanks. Also tired of tripping over the "red tank" I had to keep on my deck for emergencies. PITA. Good luck with your project!

Dave :)
