Michigan has a refund but it does not apply to personal boats, etc.
I was excited until I saw this note on the "form"
"Personal Watercraft (boats and jet skis), snowmobiles, ATVs and ORVs do not qualify for this refund."
Oh well.
I went thru the same ordeal...since when is a boat a "personal watercraft?
" PWCs are jetskiis/waverunners...boats are boats if you ask me. Not the toughest nut to crack IMHO.
Michigan has a long way to go as far as its tax laws. GM going bankrupt isn't going to help either.
You'd think a state with as much to offer to boaters would encourage boating/owning vacation property rather than punish those individuals.
I just found out that Michigan takes money from people that own non-primary residences for schools. People that live out-of-state do not want to subsidize Michigan public schools when their children attend school in other states.
They end up buying property in more tax-friendly states(not Taxachusetts of course) if they are financially savvy.
