Re: full restoration

john,.im not sure why you need a 1708 wrap.

are we talking the whole hull?...or just the transom?

here is the deal.....

the transom is not necessary unless the glass is cracked bad....right through.....this is because you will be adding a layer of 1.5 to the transom wall.....then another 1.5 on the transom.....the transom it self is 2 inches thick of wood....then you will add another 1..5 csm and a full 1708 wrap over the entire transom.....that is more than enough to fix any weak transom wall.

if you intend a full 1708 layer in the hull.....bow to stern...why?

if the boat is really weak...and you do not intend to foam....then yes....wrap it.

but if you are doing it just because you want the stregnth.....you will just be adding a lot of extra weight.

you have to remember......once you bed the stringers.....you will be tabbing them 6 inches form the stringers with a layer of csm....then 1708. 6 inches either side of the string ! that is a full foot for each stringer......then the deck will be tabbed up the wall.

glass is REALLY strong....most people think that because it flexes it is weak....not so.....studies have shown that 3 layers of 1708 (the approximate thickness of your hull at the weakest point) is stronger in point load impact tests than a sheet of aluminium of equal thickness !

Re: full restoration

im definitely planning to foam and ur right i was trying to get some strength but what u said makes alot of sense, i'll smooth the transom wall then add a layer of 1.5 to the transom wall and another layer of 1.5 to the transom it self, attach them together and add a 1.5 topped with 1708 ....

i was planning to use 3/4 inch thick plywood,

from what u said it seems like i'm gona need 2 sheets of 1 inch thick plywood to make the transom?

Re: full restoration

i like to use one 1 inch and one 3/4 inch.

i like the stiffness of the one inch wood.

but if you use 2 pieces....buy the time you tab, laminate, fill, and give a final 1708 wrap...you will be over the 2 inch thickness.

Re: full restoration

yachr dr. i hope thoe are good enough , if u need more details please point them out to me :)
please advice on what need to be done. if u say its too costy to strip done the gel coat tell me what to do... by the way my dad owed a body shop back in the day i used to help him so i know how to deal with spraying from a gun but im assuming that spraying gelcoat would harder

I think your looking at some serious rework here :( ..

They painted right over vinyl pinstripes and everything .. DOH !

You have glass damage on the transom..you have unknown damage under the crapola paint..you have dried up Fiberglass all over the inside ( which will need to be ground off )..

Before you know it your into as much $ to get started compared to finding a 'runner' that could put you on the water.

I suggest saving your cash..and the trailer..go find something that is more ... um.. workable..

Just me though..

YD.

Yeah, without some sort of sentimental attachment to that boat, I think I agree with YD, Find another project.

Re: full restoration

oh boy that may be alot of work... all i know is. its never what it seems. what i told my wife was going to be a 500 dollar project is already at 3k and will probably end up being grand total of 5-7k it really is a life changing investment for even someone like me lol.. the reason im in it so far is because of a few things... not enough patience, not enough knowledge, no restraint...
i know that it may be kinda hard to hear. but i third the motion with Yacht Dr, & Wood... If you take the boat to the local dump/transfer station they will charge you like 20-50 bucks to trash the boat, keep the trailer and the engine and go straight to craigslist.. plenty of engineless boats out there. good luck
