Effective Jan 1, 2005, “teak surfing”, “platform dragging”, and “bodysurfing” behind a motorized vessel will become an infraction in California. The fine is set at $100. AB 2222, the bill that creates this infraction, also makes it a no-no to run the engine at idle while someone is on the swim platform/deck/ladder at the rear of the boat, or hanging onto it while in the water. None of the above applies if the engine is running and you are on the platform, deck or ladder to aid in docking (or undocking), or if getting into or out of the water.

In the last 3 1/2 years, in/from Calif, 2 kids body surfing and a man swimming have been killed by carbon monoxide behind boats.

Effective May 1, 2005, any new or used boat sold in California will be required to have two stickers affixed to it that warn of carbon monoxide poisoning. A little sticker must be at the helm, a big sticker must be at/on the stern. Both stickers will be affixed by the dealership, or in the case of a private sell, the stickers will be included in your registration material sent by the DMV. Don’t have a clue how they will get stickers onto documented vessels.

Teak surfing, platform dragging, and bodysurfing are defined in the bill’s text, sec 681 (d) and (e). You can read the language here:

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/bill/asm/ab_2201-2250/ab_2222_bill_20040917_chaptered.html

Outside Calif you should expect similar legislation to appear in your state soon.

Sounds more like taking Darwin out of the equasion. I think anyone stupid enough to pull a stunt like that might just get what they deserve. Pass more and more and more laws to protect the stupid from themselves.

I was refering to the deaths of the fools.....that's exactly Dawinism....the stupid are killed off by their own actions.

The smart survive.

Passing more laws to protect the idiots is one of the reasons our human race is going backwards.

Now I’m thinking about waiting to see the new stickers before painting the boat. Maybe I can color coordinate something.

The man and one kid died in Calif, the other kid was from Calif but died in Mexico. Darwin-ism is going international.

Calif has 113,638 berths, moorings, and tie-ups at 500 locations at 89% capacity ... 101,138 boats that live in the water fulltime. I don’t know, guessing maybe 3-times that amount of boats trailered? More? Figure at least half-million boats, a couple victims of public education, and I’m guessing someone running for re-election, so now everybody pays for a pair of stickers ... and they are not likely to be color coordinated!

Make that 9 pairs of stickers.

One set in each of the following, English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Hmong, Arabic, Tagalog, Russian, and a set with pictograms on it for those that can't read.

Coming next will be a set of stickers for your car, which will tell you not to suck on the tail pipe, put your hand in the fan, or put your head under the tire.

And lets not forget the pedestrians. How about stickers on every corner that read, " Cars are mean, they will hurt you if you run in front of them."

Need to stop writing these kinds of laws to protect us from ourselves. Our species needs a little culling .

What about the stickers pointing out where the stickers are in case people can't find them?

I once worked in an office building with a proper fire extinguisher recessed into the wall of each corridor. So far so good. Then someone decided that since they were recessed they might not be visible from all points in the corridor. So some authority mandatated hanging a sign over each one that said "fire extinguisher. The next day some wise guy went around and hung another sign pointing to the first sign that said "sign".

Our boat has the engine centered and low and the exhaust vents high, about 6-ft forward of mid ship on the port side. Makes sense considering the boat is a hydrographic survey vessel designed for a crew to work hydraulic winches and towed sonar on the aft deck. There is no exhaust at the stern! Do I still need stickers?

How many parts per million in open atmosphere of carbon monoxide are required to kill a person.

If a hose is run into a car from the exhaust, a person does not die instantly.

Look how many garages crank a car in the winter with the shop door closed.

Marine Technicians, that are over the back of an engine tuning it up.

The next Calif. law will be to outlaw 2 cycle outboards, because of the pollution.

Waiting for someone to sue because there was no sign saying to keep body parts away from spinning props.

"It's the governments fault, they didn't warn poor me! How would I know it was dangerous to hang my feet in the water by the prop?"

We need a law that says you can't pass laws to prevent stupid people from injuring themselvs. It's not the governments job to save you from yourself.
