Would it be worthwhile buying one of these old OMC engines, or could it just turn into a money pit?

I've got a chance to buy an old Gale engine cheap, to use as an auxilary engine. The age puts me off, but I've heard these old engine were reliable. Also, I'd love to be able to get such an old engine up and running again.

Can you stil get spares for these?

Thanks
Steve

Yeah, it's the same as an older Johnny/Rude mechanically, so there's lots of parts still being made. So long as it's reasonably new.
Do you have any idea about the model number, HP, or anything? Buccaneers go back to 1950 and getting parts for ones that old is a little more difficult.

Re: Gale Buccaneer

I'd bet spare parts may be a bit tough. Some components were used for many years but some werent. A Gale was simply a 2 year old E/J. In other words if you had a 1969 Gale it was the same as a 1967 E/J.

If it runs now I'd check into the simple, common stuff like tune up components, carb kit or parts and water pump components. Perhaps a head gasket. If those things are still available and it ran for a couple of years, then its probably worth it. It may run a lot longer.

Thanks for the info. I haven't had a good look at it yet, but if it looks as if it will still run, I'll check on availabilty of basic spares.

Thanks again
Steve
