Hello everyone! I'm new to this boat stuff so please be easy with me. I have recently been given an old boat (no idea what it is still have to get the title)with an Gale Sovereign 40 hp model #40DE176L Serial #870170. I would like to get as much info. on this outboard as I can. I plan on restoring the boat and motor, so I would like to educate myself on what I have. If you need any more info. I will get it. Thanks in advance.

Re: Gale Sovereign 40 hp help

Thanks for the speedy response, but what is the difference between the bucaneers and the sovereigns? Also do you know if the manual is the same? The closest I come to the model # is 40DE17B.

Re: Gale Sovereign 40 hp help

Not a Gale expert but to me the Bucaneer is simply the smaller and sometimes older model Gales.
I believe the Sovereign name was used only on the 40 and 60hp motors built 60-63.The 40 was built in 61,62,63 40DE17 is a 63 electric start.63 Was the last year for Gale production. These motors are basically identical to E/J motors of those years. In my aftermarket manual repair procedures are covered in the same section as E/J motors with no Gale specific reference.
Your specs are 43.9 cu. in.40hp @ 4,500 rpm,Champion J4J(J4C)plugs set at .030,Points set at .020. 24:1 fuel mix.Same as the E/J motors. Many routine maintenance parts are available right here at Iboats under the E/J applications. Also at well established E/J dealers and NAPA auto parts.
Some NAPA branches don't know about their 600 page Marine products catalog.
