Re: Gap between coils and flywheel?

There is a special tool for setting the coils in place. I bought one for my engine (same as yours) from a Johnson dealer two years ago. It is like a heavy collar and it precisely aligns the coils so that they won't hit the flywheel.

Without this tool, it's guesswork, and can damage both the coils and the flywheel magnets.

Just back from the shed - called a "locating ring". OMC part number is 334994. Ordered mine 11/14/2000. Cost $42.63.

Good Luck

Do you think that the "locating ring" will work on any 2 cyl. i.e. 18 hp fastwin? or are they all different diameters? It looks like that part number is still indeed a good number!
Mark

I have been told that it also fits several of the smaller J/E engines. I think that most of the engine lineup had the same size magneto plate to make things easier to service. So, I'm pretty sure that the tool also does the 25, 18, 15, 10, etc.

Riverrun.... When you don't have the factory locating tool, OMC gave us another method of setting that gap correctly.

Look at the top edge of the aluminum seat that the coil attaches to. You'll see a very slight bevel there. Align the vertical edge of the metal yoke of the coil with the inside top edge of that bevel. There you have it. Now, wasn't that easy?(grin)
