Garmin 178c - Comments

I am thinking of purchasing the Garmin 178c GPS/SOUNDER combo. I like it because of the compact size and will fit exactly where my exisiting FF mounts. Would appreciate any user comments on this unit before I release the $$$$$.<br />Thanks

I haven't had a 178C, Ted, but I have had Garmin 38, MAP12, 162 and now a 276C.<br /><br />All have been very reliable and user friendly (provided the user is a good studier of the manuals )<br /><br />In general, I don't recommend combo units, because it takes the GPS away from other applications. I think I would prefer the 176C plus a small FF, then use the 176C in my vehicle as well as the boat.<br /><br />(215)

I have a 176C as JB suggests and the only complaint I have is the screen brightness. I believe this was adressed with the 276C, so I am a little surprised that JB recommends the 176 after having a 276 Both can be had with the Land and Sea package which has been wonderful. It also comes with a non-skid, weighted mount that allows me to use it on friend's boats etc. Neither the 176 nor the 276 has as big a screen as the 178C. I belive the comparable non-sounder unit is the 172C.<br /><br />I also elected to stay away from the combo unit; if one goes you lose both . . .

I also have the 176C and ditto the complaint from QC. Could be brighter in the daylight. Can't go wrong with Garmin IMHO.<br /><br />Dave

Good point, QC. I actually meant the 172C because of the bigger (and brighter) screen.<br /><br />(214)
