I recently purchased a Garmin 192C chartplotter and am thinking of upgrading it to a Sounder by adding the module and transducer.

Has anyone done this before?

Re: Garmin 192C Sounder Upgrade

Will the remote work with the 192C?

This is what I found.

Turn your GPS into a fish finder. Transducers sold separately

The GSD 20 is a remote, black-box sounder that transmits 500 watts at 50/200kHz. It’s designed for use with the GPSMAP 2006 / 2006C, GPSMAP 2010 / 2010C, GPSMAP 182 / 182C and GPSMAP 232 to provide SONAR capabilities to these units. The sounder module sends data serially in a Garmin proprietary format to up to two units on board. When viewed on Garmin chartplotters, you’ll see full-featured sounder displays in either split- or full-screen presentations. Features include auto-ranging, 2X and 4X auto and manual zoom, optional fish symbols and See-Thru technology, which separates fish from thermoclines and structure.

Please Note: This product does not include a transducer.

After seeing that it does not include the transducer and may not work with the 192C I would consider the 250 or the 250C.

Re: Garmin 192C Sounder Upgrade

Glad you asked that, BB.

I just bought a Boston Whaler Striper 15 that has very little console space. I have been looking for a sonar that will fit along with my Garmin 276C.

I looked up the GSD-20, and it will work with the 192C, as well as my 276C.

My problem is the cost. Add the cost of the GSD-20 ($266)and a transducer (starts at $83) and you can buy some pretty elegant sonars for that. If you go to ebay you can find some pretty nice combos for that much.

EDIT: Those prices are MSRP from the Garmin site, and the Xducer is a dual freq with speed and temp. iboats prices are a lot less but they don't list the dual freq/temp/speed transom mount Xducer. Bet they could get it for you, though.

No way will I part with the 276C, as it is my vehicle navigator, too.

I, too, would like to hear from folks who use a GSD-20.

Re: Garmin 192C Sounder Upgrade

Ahoy, BB.

Talked with a guy on another site that has a GSD-20 on his 276C, and one who has it on a Garmin 2010C.

Both are very happy with it. They tell me it performs as well as a high-end color sonar, depending on which transducer you use.

The guy with the 276C said he had to get help from Garmin to wire it up, but the 2010C (and I suspect the 192C)is plug and play.

At iboats prices it is a lot cheaper than adding a sophisticated color sonar, but still a bit more than an entry level mono sonar.

I think I am going to go for it.

(30)
