I am thinking about buying a garmin 340c depth sounder, anyone out there have one? what are your comments? Icurrently use an Eagle Optima but it just doesnt have the power for 250 ft plus depths that we fish in. some thing that works at speed would be nice also

Re: garmin 340c

I have one that I bought earlier this year, and have had a tough time getting good reads from it. I have adjusted transducer multiple times with no luck. Transducer is in the same spot as the previous b/w Garmin unit that worked well. I'm tired of trying and probably going to put it on E-bay and try something else. I do like Garmin as I have had quiet a few GPS and Sounder units over the years, but this one is frustrating me to no end.

What is it doing? What transducer are you using?

Using the transducer that came with it. When underway it always loses bottom and flashes 00 depth. Will hold depth at anchor or drift then lose it. Fish markings are poor in situations on others that always have been clear. It just doesn't seem to perform well. Bottom contour in areas that I know don't always seem to ring true. I boat usually in Western Lake Erie where average water depth is only 30 ft.

You're loosing signal somehow. First off, make sure your running the unit in 200 kHZ mode. Then try running it in manaul mode and turn up the gain until you get a second bottom return. See if it holds bottom then.

If not, lower the transducer further down in the water. If that don't work you have a problem with the transducer.
