I have a 1986 150 Evinrude with the VRO pump still in use. I have noticed that on the port side of the engine, the side with the VRO pump, i am getting a pool of oil/fuel mixture. Causing oil accumulation in the splash well with a strong smell too. What has deteriorated? Gasket, line, or is it something more severe? I even replaced all of the zip ties holding the fuel lines leading to Carbs. Frustrating. I can't imagine it is all too safe to be running like this. If i need to take pictures i can def. do so.

not sure if you will like this suggestion, my thought would be to clean it up real nice so that the beginning of a leak would show quickly and surely, then run it in tank, at lake, or on muffs with cover off and look for the leak. it can be all sorts of places, just about anywhere that you have a fitting, gasket, or hose in that location. If you are smelling gas and not just oil, I would also humbly suggest a fire extinguisher to be on hand just in case. If after the cleaning you are still getting a fuel AND oil mixture leaking (and haven't found it), I would then look at the areas after the oil and fuel mix. Things that come to mind at 1st would be leaky carbs, and hoses around them.
I know that this is a lame sounding answer... but that is the angle I would take to track down the source of the leak. Clean lets you find it easier, running it lets it leak, and having bright light will make it easier to spot..... maybe some of the VRO savvy guys will chime in and tell you the most common areas for leaks.

Now that you mentioned this, i noticed i only smell it after i return from the water. After i trim the motor up. The puddle is in the area of the carbs. Should the carbs not be "dumping" the fuel when i trim up the engine, i noticed the bottom carb do this once. I bet that is where the leak is.

Turn the steering wheel all the way to a stop, this should bind the carb floats in the bowl so they can't pivot and leak.

Thanks, seems to be working. Cheers.
