Force 125 HP

2.5 MPG @ WOT

6.0 MPG @ 1/2 Throttle

This information was estimated on a calm day. Light to no winds, smooth water on the Monongahela River. I traveled downstream 7 miles, then back upstream 7 miles. Before we left I filled up the tank, and whenever we got back I filled up again.

WHAT'S YOUR BOAT GETTING?

Just created a GENERAL THREAD for folks to post what kind of GAS CONSUMPTION they are getting...

Well, I have no idea what I get, nor do I really want to think about it....but;

2001 Conquest 2100VBR

260hp Volvo Penta

Trottle 70% at 3200rpm's

Throttle 20% at 4000rpm's

Throttle 10% wide open at 4900rpm's

Last Saturday- 9 hours on the water, *4 hours floating or at anchor, 5 hours runnning = 27.5 gallons.

for boats, the better measurement is gallons per hour. MPG is for cars. Recreational boats are not used in the same way as cars on the road.

SO FAR 3-1/2 MONTHS AND STILL ON ONE TANK OF FUEL. I hate it.

Sitting in the driveway covered up and ready to go. With the heat indexes around 120 and so many other family commitments I haven't been able to get her out since the spring. Ordinarily, I'll get through the whole weekend on around 20-25 gallons with my wife and I running at around 1/2 throttle.

We usually run about 45 minutes or so and then anchor to fish and sleep/swim/eat whatever. I tell her we just hang the poles over for looks. Because people would think we were crazy if we went to all that trouble just to get a nap.

I agree with one HUGE addition. You have to have speed so you can figure out your current MPG. Yes, I know that sounds like a contradiction, but hear me out. I don't care when I am going to run out of fuel, I care where I am going to run out of fuel. GPH, with nothing else, tells me very little . . . ;) So for the average boater, without a fuel flow monitor, using average MPG, and then being very conservative, is pretty important.

You guys reporting your throttle position:

a) where do you get that?
b) what do I do with it?

I think we need RPM and speed for this to be valuable info . . . :)

I have no real fuel usage estimates, but while on vacation we used only 16 gallons for: a 2 hour evening cruise and 3 full days on the water, each day there was 2-3 hours of running, pulling the kids on a tube, etc.. the rest of the time we were beached. We rarely ever feel the need to go WOT, so most cruising was 25-30mph.

Fuel consumption is also based off other variable like wind condition, chop, extra wieght of the boat, drag, etc...

Without specifing those charateristics it's hard to determine GPH/MPH comparitively.

I never realized that posting your AVERAGE fuel consumption would be such a mind draining task!

No one needs Einstein to answer this question!

If you checked your fuel consumption when it was windy, then just say "it was windy the day I monitored my fuel consumption".

If you had a couple extra pounds onboard the day you checked it, you could mention this as well.

I'm sure any details would be useful to everybody.

I figured it would be a nice thread for everyone to compare and contrast their fuel consumption.

If you are not sure what your average fuel consumption is it is okay, you don't have to reply. You are also not required to list the top ten reasons WHY you cannot give an educated guess.

Thanks to all!

I don't think you're crazy. It's soo easy to fall asleep on a boat. I like to wake up early on the weekend, get the boat on the sunny lake around 8am and take a little nap while the rest of civilization is still waking up.

It's very "Zen"

Agreed, and that's why I always post in these threads. If we all had GPS and a fuel flow meter then we'd all have good, real time data. but the fact is we don't, so a complete understanding of the variables is very important. Also, we need to understand the differences related to speed load and horsepower. This is a very complex discussion and a few anecdotal pieces of information can be literally dangerous if not understood . . .

Mark,

I wasn't trying to make it difficult but it does matter alot. Going up lake george on my vacation alittle while back I was able to get to the midpoint of the lake from the southern tip about 16 miles in 4 to 5 gallons (i think). On the way back down it took me at least double of that due to the conditions as they got down right dangerous. So without stating conditions and what not it's really hard to say what you truely are averaging. Good thread regardless cause I am interested. :)

Sorry, I was just speaking in general. I wasn't trying to direct that at you! I just think it is funny because a lot of people, not just on this thread but others as well, will NOT directly post on the subject in question. I see more often a "beat around the bush" because of uncertainty.

I am going to edit my first post so people know what my water/weather conditions were. I didn't think to take those "X" factors in consideration!

Thanks for the reply!

So what's your average GPH? Are you counting running time only or any time you're in the boat?

One of my boats had 78 hours on it when I bought it 3 years ago. It's somewhere in the high 200's now, so I've put about 200 hours on it in 3 years. I replaced the gauges when I bought it with Smartcraft gauges (GPS speedo, electronic fuel flow measurement, fuel flow totalizer, etc). Last time we were out my total amount of fuel used since the gauges were installed just went over 500 gallons.

So my average GPH with 200 hours of running and 500 gallons of gas used is right at 2.5 GPH.

We probably spend at least 5 hours anchored for every hour on the engine. So that would mean that my average GPH for boat usage time (as opposed to engine time only above) would be .5 GPH.

Please explain how any of that information is useful to anybody?

1969 Slickcraft SS170V, 17ft 1100lbs dry.

1995 Evinrude 70HP 2-stroke.

15p SS Solas HR Titan 4 -blade prop.

WOT Speed 35mph @ 7GPH = 5mpg.

I average about 7mpg when fishing (combo of WOT, Cruise, Trolling).
