I have bought this 1985 bayliner capri 4 cyl volvo engine w/ volvo penta drive. I have taking it out to the water yet. It is just sitting in my dad's auto shop. When ever i turn on the ignition or idling ( with muffs on of course) i smell this odor. But i dont know if this is the odor coming from the muffler. I also been told when on the water the muffler will be underwater and i there wont be any odor.
i just want to be safe.

Re: gas fumes?

the gas fumes mean only one thing......you have a leak. more than likely at the tank.....it MUST be fixed.

we just did a new gas tank on a campion....the old tank looked great....but it had a leak no one saw....the boat caught on fire....it very near cost the operator his life..!. luckley he had 2 fire extuingushers....one at the helm and one in the motor compartment....

do not play around with a bomb......and thats what you have ...is a ticking bomb

Re: gas fumes?

being a 1985,i would pull the tank out have it cleaned and checked by a pro. and then ,replace ALL the lines from it to the motor!!!

BEFORE YOU EVER START IT AGAIN!!!

Why is the tank only leaking while running and not while sitting in the garage? Sounds more like a leak upstream from the fuel pump. But I do agree, do not take any chances. It must be fixed.

But...I have to also wonder, is he just smelling exhaust fumes and confusing it with fuel odor? No matter, the answer is the same. Do not assume, identify the smell and don't take chances.
