Re: Gas in the Oil

I checked the compression on all four cylinders and they are ok. I checked the carberator and couldn't find any visible problems. I then changed the spark plugs, imagine that, and the engine starts just like it did before my wonderful experience. The only concern I have now is that when I changed the oil last night, it was completely milky white (maybe a little darker than milk.) I was going to rule it out as a bunch of gas in the oil, but know I am concerned that rodbolt is correct about water in the oil. When I did the compression check, I looked in the cylinders and noticed a liquid sitting in the cylinder. I ruled it out at gas, which it very well may be. I will do further testing this week, time permitting. Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions. You guys are great.

Yep, you have water coming in from somewhere, likly a cracked head, Could just be a head gasket though, You have to pull the heads anyway, so have them magnafluxed and surfaced if they check out OK, Sorry to hear of your troubles!

Re: Gas in the Oil

Hello, Sorry to hear that also. The inline fours are notorious for blowing head gaskets and cracking heads when subjected to a good overheat. Lubedude has the ticket here. Pull the head. While it's off send it out to the machine shop for a complete service. Get it checked for warpage, cracks and have the valve train checked and worked on if required. Use a marine grade head gasket when reassembling and make sure you follow the proper torque sequence when reinstalling the head to prevent a reoccurrence of the oil in water blues. Good luck...Let us know how things go.

Re: Gas in the Oil

I pulled the head tonight and didn't notice any significant damage, but I think it is warped. I am taking it to my machinist tomorrow. My next question is what is the tourqe sequence and pressure for my engine. This is a 2004 3.0L 4.0Cyl 135 HP Mercruiser Engine. It was not in the manaul that came with the boat. There were all the other torque specs, but not for the head. I don't have the service manual, but I intend to buy it soon. Thanks again to everyone.

Re: Gas in the Oil

I just took the head to a machine shop and they agreed that it was warped. 5 minutes and $25.00 later I had a machined head. I will reassemble this weekend and keep you guys updated. Thanks again.

Re: Gas in the Oil

Now I need to know what the torque specs for my engine are. Can anyone supply me with them or point me to where I can buy the service manual for my 2004 3.0L 4Cyl 135 HP engine. Thanks again for all your help.

You have a 2004 mercruiser 3.0L
with an Alpha drive right?
The seawater pump is in the outdrive.
am I off base to ask about warranty coverage?
As for torque specs and tightening sequence get advice from mercury because of engine being 04 model as something might have been changed from earlier models

Darian F.,

You are not off base to ask, but this is damage occurred because of my impropperly installing a new lower unit and not getting the water intake tube alinged properly. Stupid me. Anyway, it has been a learning experience and now I know this thing inside and out.

Re: Gas in the Oil

I recently rebuilt a 4 cylinder Mercruiser and here's some torque settings given to me:
Head 93 ft lbs (retorque in 20 Hrs)
Rods 11/32-24 33 ft lbs
Rods 3/8-24 40 ft lbs
Mains 65 ft lbs
Manifold to Head 23 ft lbs (retorque after first start up)

In fact, here is the thread on Iboats where I received a lot of help: rebuild info

Good luck! :)

Re: Gas in the Oil

After putting on the freshly machined head last weekend, I tested the boat and noticed that there was still water getting in the oil. Over the last week I have taken the head and manifold to my machinist and had them pressure test both. The head turned out good, but the manifold has a large crack in it. Therefore, I am ordering a new manifold and gaskets. I am hoping that this is the end of the repairs. I will keep you updated after I get the parts on Monday.

Re: Gas in the Oil

Well, I have finally finished this 2.5 month project. I gave it the final river test on Friday and found no evidence of water in the oil. It also idled much better since the cylinders weren't getting flooded with water. On Saturday I changed the oil, the truly final test, and it looked perfect. No evidence of water in the entire four quarts. I now know this engine/drive inside and out and I never want to see the inside of it again. Knock on wood. Thanks for all of your suggestions and especially thanks to rodbolt :) for leading me down the path of water in the oil. I have learned a lot. Thanks.

WOW, What an Ordeal.....
Sooo Glad you've got it nailed down.........

Now that you've got the motor sorted out,
You Might want to check out the Bellows,+ Flappers in the Exhaust.......

My thinking is;
If you Over-heated the motor Bad Enough to do the Damage you've just Fixed,
You've No Doubt Smoked the Rubber Parts in the Exhaust Stream............. ;)
Good Luck......

Bondo,

That's where I started at. I worked my way back into the boat and into the engine. I thought I had it nailed down a couple of months ago when I replaced the burned up bellows. Thanks for the advice anyway. I appreciate it.
