I have a 1988 Evinrude 48 SPL with an odd gas leak problem. I can't find the leak anywhere, but there is gas and oil in the bottom of the engine housing. When running, the engine idles rough, but runs fine at WOT. When at idle in the water, it looks like some gas and oil start to float on top of the water indicating it might be running rich, but I don't know for sure.

I do not disconnect the gas line when it is in the garage (is this a mistake?), so maybe the gas pressure from the tank if forcing gas thru the carbs, accounting for the build up of gas and oil when in storage. I have a manual, but it has been of little help.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks,

-Kevin

Squeeze the primer ball until hard and have someone turn the key to ON, but not start the motor. Then have them push in on the key to "choke" the motor.

Look closely on the port side and look for gas spraying out from the very small fuel lines going to the carbs or intake manifold. Also on the other side look at the electric choke primer and the red lever for any leakage there.

You could have something as simple as the drain hose from the bottom of the air box disconnected or broken.

Thanks, will do. The primer bulb never really gets hard, just somewhat firm. I'll check with a helper and take my manual with me.

By the way, should I disconnect the gas line from the motor when not in use? Any thoughts on this? The boat has a built in tank. Thanks.

Sounds like you might have a float needle/seat leaking just enough to raise the bowl fuel level at idle and at speed you are using the fuel as fast as it leaks. With out the motor running pull the airbox off and pump the bulb watching the carbs throats for fuel running out.
