I've never had an 2 stroke motor before I got my Fabuglas runabout. Can anyone please tell me the proper oil/gas ratio to run my 40 HP Johnson outboard on? Thanks in advance for the help.... I am new to all this and need all the help I can get!

Re: Gas/oil mix ratio

Most will say pre and including 1964 would be 24:1. Post 1964 is 50:1..Although, Johnson's own ad says they can use 50:1 in 1964..

Re: Gas/oil mix ratio

I was told by it's previous owner it was from the late 70's. It's Model number is RDS-265 if that helps any. I believe from the looks of it the previous owner is probably correct about the year but i'm no expert. The motor says "Super Quiet" down on the drive unit if that's a help. Thank you in advance... I appreciate all the help as i am new to this and a family man trying to get it all done without breaking the bank!

RDS-26S is a '64. 50:1. :)

Use 87 octane gas and TC-W3 outboard oil. Read about decarbing in the FAQ forum too.

Rick, it looks exactly like that! I found a tag that was with some parts in the back of the boat and it says "year: 1966, HP 40. The year and the HP were handwritten on the tag. I hope this helps. You guys have been great dealing with such a novice as I. I really appreciate all the help. The wife and kids are dying to get out on the lake so every little bit helps!

Another silly question... what kind of speed do you think I'll see if the engine is running well on a 16 foot fiberglass boat?

It really depends on the boat and the load, but most should see 25-28mph with a 40hp wide open.
