Hello. I just received a 10hp motor and have seen reference to a pressurized gas tank. This is new to me, the tank that came with it was just a "typical" red plastic tank. Could someone tell me a little about a "pressurized" gas tank and if it is something that I need to be able to use this motor. Thank you.

Re: gas tank, circa 1960 10hp Johnson

My 1959 10 horse has a pressurized tank. There is not a fuel pump on this type of motor. Two hoses between the tank and motor, one pushes air down into the tank and pressurizes it, the other pushes fuel up to the motor. The tank is airtight. Modern tanks have a vent in the cap. The fittings are different than modern fuel pump type too. If you can't hook it up you've got the wrong tank, if it was cobbled to fit together with an old style fitting it wouldn't run anyway. Mine wouldn't stay running with an airleak around the top gasket of the tank.

Please post your model number!! 1959 was the last year of the pressurized system. If your motor is a 1960, it'll have a fuel pump and can use a regular single-line tank...

- Scott

Look at the fuel fitting on the engine. If it has 2 prongs, it uses a regular tank, non pressurized.

If it has three prongs, then you need the pressurized tank.

If it's a 1960, it should be the modern type with 2 prongs, but...who knows...OMC could have been getting rid of some '59's as '60s.

Give us your model number and we can tell you the year for sure.

Thank you all for the help. I have been having trouble getting the model number --- I have looked everwhere, all I can find is what I think is the seriel number --- 2114650. I just replaced the fuel pump, so I can now surmise it is a 1960, based on the feedback you all have provided. I would surmize also it means I don't need the pressurized tank. Thanks for all of your help. PS ---- based on some research, it seems like the model might be QD QDL21, but I am still trying to confirm that.

If it has a fuel pump, you don't need the pressurized tank. It will take a standard tank with standard OMC fittings.
