Gas to oil ratio

I was told to use premix instead of starting fluid. I have a 2003 yamaha 140 and was told to use 50 to 1. I'm not good in math, but does a quarter gallon of gas to .64 ounces sound right? And how do I come up with .64 ounces? Thamsk

Yes that is correct. 32/50 = 0.64oz.

If you already have weed whacker or snowblower mix, use it.
Buy a Single Mix Bottle and make up a gallon. If just for starting, the oil type won't matter.
Reuse the bottle and re-fill it with TC-W3 Oil for the next time.

Better yet, let's get that engine fixed. No need for starting fluid!

What is all this hype on using one brand over another when using TC-W3 oil in an outboard.
Standards are standards but does different makers add additional chemicals for different reasons.
Prices vary a whole lot from manufacturer to manufacture.
Looking to save on some oil to afford more gas.

You could use a laboratory pipette, it's 80 Mil for each 3.80 Gal, state of the art fuel/oil mixing.. Would be ideal for the Single Mix Bottle to be transparent to check its level and mix same amount per gallon.

Look: If the engine has been run, there will be enough residual oil in it to protect it. Thus, while starter fluid will wash off the oil and is not good to use, for starting purposes, a 50-1 premix has a lot of leeway. For priming to start, simply put a good dollop of oil into a pint of fuel: a light blue color will be close to correct. Too lean on oil will not hurt in the short period of running and too rich will not foul the plugs.

And as said above, if the engine has continual starting problems, fix it so it doesn't need priming

Pumping the Throttle before starting, will cycle the Accelerator pumps in the Carburetor.
It is the same thing as squirting a manual prime down the throat.

Look down the Carb Throat and pump the throttle.
You should see one or more "Squirt Guns" spraying gas on each opening stroke.
If not, the Accelerator pumps need work.

This will also cause the engine to "Stumble" when you open the throttle quickly.
