Gas vent question

I have a flats boat and the fuel fill is on the front deck casting platform. The vent for the fuel tank is vented thru the cap. I had a issue recently being stuck under a small dock during a severe rainstorm. The only part of the boat exposed during the storm was the deck. Water was pooling up on the deck around the gas fill. Well I am guessing that with the amount of water pooling that water made it in the tank thru the vent while it was venting. Now that i have drained the tank and fixed that issue I do nit want that to happen again. All that for this question can i reroute the vent to vent elsewhere or does it need to stay with the fill. Any other creative suggestions that could help with the issue will be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Gas vent question

Before making any changes are you sure there was water in the tank? ( You said you were guessing ). I would have thought that the filler neck/cap would protrude far enough above the deck so that water couldn't get in?

Ok. If you can post a picture of the fill cap/area it may help folk understand the situation better.
Is the cap recessed in the deck? ( if so there has to be a drain). Has this happened before?
To answer your question you could cut into the vent section of your fill hose and splice an extension tube to go to a separate vent fitting. Just a thought - I don't know if this is possible in your case, or even safe:eek:

I had a similar issue with my boat. The caps where located in a small recess on the gunwale. Not a problem except when sitting in it's parking space at the house that was just the right angle to allow water to accumulate in the recess and wick up into the vent trap. I contacted my builder and they knew of the problem. They sent me a set of mounting rings to put under the fill ports. Problem solved
