gasket removal and replacement

I am replacing a torn exhaust elbow bellows.<br />The boat is a 1985 16' open bow Stingray.<br />The engine is a 2.5L 4 cyl inline GM, sn#6916556.<br /><br />I've removed the exhaust elbow itself, but am having a problem removing the old gasket. I'm currently trying to scrape it off with a screwdrive, but I'm wondering if there's a better way. It's really really stuck to the exhaust manifold.<br /><br />Also, what would you reccommend doing to seal in the new gasket? is there some kind of gasket goop that should be applied to get a good sticky seal?<br /><br />Thanks,<br />bill

down to any auto place and get a gasket scraper<br /><br />if you have a new style merc gray gasket they go on dry<br /><br />you need to get both sides this clean and be sure there FLAT or its going to leak and be FUBAR<br /><br />

Hate to be the one to tell you, but those bellows just don't get "Torn", they do however get burned and crispy on the inside and blow out.<br />That is from lack of water flow. When was the last time the impeller was replaced?

Tommays- Yikes. YIKES! Neither of *my* surfaces look anything like that. Thats amazing. OK, I'm off to get a gasket scraper. Thank you.<br /><br />Don- yes, thats the exact description, burned and crispy. A mechanic friend replaced the impeller 3 years ago, now that he's gone, looks like I'll learn how to do it. Also, were the water passages (The 3 slots around the exhaust port in tommays picture) plugged up in your manifold, how about in the riser, or in the outlet to that hose. You could have a plugged riser or manifold, and no impeller will push past a clog. That's when it's time for new riser and manifold if plugged.<br />Cleaning usually ends in a hole that ends up taking out the complete engine due to water in the cylinders.<br /><br />This is a Mercruiser your working on isn't it????<br /><br />Aren't you glad working on a marine engine is so fun, inexpensive, and easy to do :rolleyes: ;)

Don-<br /> The passages were all clean at on both the manifold and the elbow. but...<br />when I had the lower bellows off (there's 2 of these rubber tubes, the top one changes from 3" to 4" and the lower one is straight through. Anyway, I saw a very thin stright bar passing through the lower metal pipe. Could this at one time been holding the flappers? If so, could they be somewhere further down the exhaust outlet and plugging the flow?<br /><br />By the way, the engine gauge never showed any evidence of overheating, always ran cool.<br /><br />Yup its a Mercruiser.<br /><br />Yah boy, fun fun fun.<br /><br />Sure wish I had more mechanic friends and fewer golfers.<br /><br />Thanks Don-<br />Bill

Yep, that rod would have held the flappers.<br />They may have broken and gone into the drive, into the exhaust tube or the inlet to the drive.<br />It could actually cause high speed running problems.<br />Here is an online Mercruiser manual for your drive. You will find info on how to change the impeller, plus anything else involved with the drive.
