Re: Gasoline Pricing

DJ, I was kidding, you know that. I only said it because I was putting my boat in the garage for winter storage, and had the Rush show on, and he was talking about the oil pricing issue.

And yes, building more refineries will increase our capacities, but we will never see gas much below $2 a gallon again. After all, those new refineries cost money, care to guess where those costs will be passed on to?

The oil companies are chomping at the bit to produce more. They make their money on volume, not gouging. Gouging sets them up for all kinds of Fed. investigations-they DO NOT want that.

BTW-Glad to hear from you.

oddjob,

That $0.48 is an AVERAGE. See original Post. The trouble is that is nobody thinks about it. The Fed, or State can impose an increase-overnight, and the public will biotch about the oil company, not the REAL source of getting in your wallet.

Am I wasting my time?

federal tax 18.3¢
state & local 30¢

Also most (but not all) states also charge sales tax on gasoline, as a percentage of selling price, so as price goes up, so do taxes.

Believe it or not, in most states, the "taxable sales price" includes the federal tax.

Wrong. EVERY American uses diesel. I'd be willing to bet everything in your house, including the materials it is made out of were once on a diesel truck. Same is true for everybody else on this board. You could ride a steam powered bicycle everywhere and diesel prices still affect you. Plus, MILLIONS of amerians drive diesel vehicles, and the tax break DIRECTLY helped them. It also was a big help for all the trucks for relief workers and supplies.

At least the government was trying to help. What did the oil companies do? Oh yeah...jack up prices in a time of need.

And the hiway trucks cause the most damage to the roads. I hope the waiving of taxes is short term on diesel.

And I am surprised to hear, OJ, that we haven't built a new road, or repaired an existing road, since Clinton was in office. I bet all those crews currently working in Northern Michigan on I-75 will be surprised to learn they don't exist, or at least aren't going to get paid.

Diesel fuel is the lifeblood of the entire planet. ZmOz is dead right on that one.

Re: Gasoline Pricing

Odd, For some perverse reason I like the Rush show. I have, on more than a few occasions, caught myself thinking "he has a point". I'd listen to a lib talk show too if one existed (I always like to hear both sides), they just don't seem to be organized enough to do one up properly (or maybe they don't have much to say to me any more). I am not sure what hat and T-shirt I may or may not have, I am just another proud American consumer of Petrolium Products... :)

Re: Gasoline Pricing

There are businesses and there are businesses. For all practical purposes a few giant oil companies are enjoying a virtual monopoly on a product that we must have and there no other suitable substitutes. Through incestious mergers and strangulation in refining capacity, they have us by the 'nads and they are seeing how much twisting they can get away with. The petroleum monopoly is like no other so called free enterprise business.
