Good Day to all,

i recently seen my lake neighbor changing his gear lube on a 1990's 150HP johnson.
He added about half lucas oil stabilizer and then the other the marine 90W oil. he says he's done that on all his out boards.

i never thought about that. i had a couple questions:

1) does it foam up in the gearcase?
2) the additive will increase the pressure in the gearcase any risk of blowing a seal, i guess you could add a lower mix (instead of 50/50, 25/75)

I know additives are mostly snake oil but have seen lucas product help in other areas.

Anybody have experience with using the Lucas oil stabilizer in outboard lower units?

cheers

No experience with it in a gear case. What advantage is claimed by the snake oil salesman? Will make your teeth whiter? Pay off your motgage? Make your wife like you again?

In that ratio, I would think the bearings would suffer from lack of viscosity

Exactly!! I've always used a name brand outboard gear lube and have had zero problems. Why reinvent the wheel?

Napa Auto used to have a little display on the counter showing the supposed benifit of lucas.. They had 2 little clear plastic [see thru] contraptions with 3 small -maybe 2 in diam-gears, hooked up to a little hand crank. One had straight oil. one had lucas treated oil. Just enough to cover about the lower 3rd of the gears, the were basically stacked on top or each other. Lower gear turned the middle gear which turned the top gear. When ya cranked the one with straight oil, most of the oil would sling off the gears, leaving the uppermost gear with little oil. Crank the lucas oil rig it would stick, stay on ,the gears. Kinda reminded my of ... phlem... [sorry] thick, stick, gooey. But vicious. But it really hung on the gears all the way to top, and APPEARED to provide a superior gear/oil bond.

Like the others have said, I've used name brand gear lubes for years, with no problems. It is a good practice to change it once a year to check for issues.

Yeah for the record, i'm not thinking of using it. just curious about any longer term problems it may cause, so if my neighbor starts having Lower unit problems i can add my 2 cents about the lucas additive. I usually change twice a year just for good measure.

i've never used the oil stabilizer but have used there automatic transmission stuff for a couple old worn transmissions, with great results.

anyway looks like no one around here wants to admit to using the stuff. hehehehe probably for the best.

I wouldn't take information from here just so you can add 2 cents during his misfortune (if he has one). He has something you (and others here) don't - experience using that particular product in that application. There's already too much bad information out there from people sharing their 'personal opinion' about something when in reality it's just something they read, usually of which is someone else's opinion. Essentially you get the telephone affect.

Thanks Yoster, thats exactly what i was hoping for, someone else, (hopefully more mechanically inclined) who has experience with the product. But so far no luck.

I've had the same question myself. I remember the little gear wheel demonstration, very impressive, it did seem to more thoroughly coat the gears with oil. Someone mentioned foaming. I know a lot of guys use Lucas in their deisels. Deisels are hard on oil and diesel oil has to resist foaming so my assumption is Lucas wouldn't contribute to foaming. I am thinking about trying 20/80 Lucas/oil.

I must say, I put some Lucas in my 7.3l Ford Diesel. The following day I was the only guy, while I was there, to beat a parking ticket in City Court. So the obvious conclusion is Lucas helps beat parking tickets....

Wow, someone who actually thinks instead of running off at the mouth.
