gear grinding

I have a 1987 bayliner with a force 125 ob.I have done alot of work getting it running,but i have a problem with it grinding when i try to put it in gear.I would be thankful for any advice on adjusting this problem.

When you're putting it into gear, be quick about it. Don't slowly ease it into gear or it will grind. The other thing is to make sure the shift linkage is adjusted properly. Also idle speed in neutral should be about 850ish. If the idle speed is too high, it may make it more difficult for a smooth engagement.

thanks for the input and it will go in gear if i shift fast.Just thought i could make it smoother

As PNW mentioned, there is no clutch for smooth engaging it is all pure mechanical, metal to metal engagement with clutch dogs. So instead of easing it in, be snappy and always put a little gas into it when engaging. Idle speed is also critical as the higher it is the more likely it will grind not to mention it can cause untimely wear out.
