Gear Lube Leak

I have a 1994 larson 280 with twin 4.3LX alpha drive Mercruisers, which have about 410 hours on them. I just had the impellers replaced, as the starboard engine was overheating at high PRM's. Prior to the repair, the gear lube reservoir would drop only slightly during the season (it was being used on a slow speed-limit river then  )

However, during the past month I have taken it across Lake Ontario & around in the St Lawrence :D but just noticed that the gear lube reservoirs have dropped almost to empty  .

Is it likely that there is a connection between the impeller repair & the change  ? Did they likely botch something?

My guess is I need new seals when it is pulled for the season. Previously, when having the gear lube changed, it has been reported that all looked fine. Should I be worried at this point  ?

Re: Gear Lube Leak

the gear lube tank is your warning system so there is some type of problem

there is a quad ring that seals the upper and lower gear case that is part of the pump change

tommays

So are you saying that the impeller repair mechanic probably installed the "quad ring" seal wrong when they were doing the work???

If that is so, and I change the seal within the next month, are my outdrives potentially screwed from water intrusion or some other problem???

Re: Gear Lube Leak

i am not saying anything was done wrong only that the tank did its job to warn you there is a problem BEFORE the drive self destructed from a lack of oil

the next step is to find out were it went

it is strange that both drives went low and it could be as simple as they were not filled up all the way

but no one can say that for sure so they need to be tested for leaks to see if there is a problem

waiting till its a good time is a roll of the dice

tommays
