Is it ok to use Castral 85-90 wt gear lube for my 1978 35hp Johnson outboard lower unit? I also have a Bravo 3 1996 that needs a lube change what do you recomend. Is there a difference in Marine lube and Auto lube? And how often should the lower end gear lube be changed? Any help will be great.

Re: Gear Lube

Typically it should get changed once a year. You must use Marine Lube as it contains emulsifiers.
Use whatever the manufacture recommends for each unit.

Re: Gear Lube

Bill, Electric shift motors require special "Type C" gear oil. Is that older Johnny electric shift? Mechanical shift motors use any "marine gear oil fo rmechanical shift motors". I do not think the Bravo requires anything special, but you might check. I use synthetic Marine Gear oil in my newer motors, when I can get it.
