Hey All,

New to the board, hopefully someone can help. Just bought a 1992 boat with a 1992 Yamaha 85hp outboard.

I decided to change the lower unit oil, just in case, and found no water in the oil, bonus! My question is, according to the generic manual I bought, you have to refill the oil from the lower drain screw. Does it matter if you put the lower screw back in and fill it from the top (check)screw?

Thanks in advance!

Tim,

I have always filled lower units as discribed in your manual. I do quite a few so I have a pressure pump with a fitting for the drain plug hole on it. But if you go to a marine shop or I am sure that this site would have a small pump that fits on your oil container (they are cheap) and it will pump it in. This way you don't have to wait until your oil settles and you know for sure that it is at the proper level when it overflows out the top hole. Just make sure that you install the top level screw before you remove your pump hose or it will drain out quickly.

Happy Boating,

Len
