Quicksilver Premium gear oil is adequate for engines below 75 hp. The hi performance oil is recommended for engines over 75hp

Re: Gear oil ?

The Evinrude HPF - Pro gear oil is the absolute best for your outboard, but the Merc or Quicksilver Hi-Performance gear oil is OK also. Stay away from the Merc Premium gear oil as that is only a basic hypoid lube and only recommended for midrange and smaller motors.

Re: Gear oil ?

Sweet thank you. It's what I run in my speed boat and my House boat. And all I can find locally. I was hoping it worked for this outboard too

Re: Gear oil ?

"Hypoid" oil refers to the stuff that they used in car rear ends back yon. Hypoid gears are where the pinion gear runs below the centerline of the ring gear. High tech at one time, nothing unusual nowadays. Plain 80-90wt outboard gear oil will work fine in your 18. The Quicksilver even better.
