Wonder if anyone can help me on this...

Ive a 2004 90HP 4 stroke Mariner on our fishing boat. I launched from the ramp at the weekend, started up fine, I brought the control lever back to select reverse, all seemed fine, pulled back further to move away but she shot forward...!

My first real mishap in 5yrs boating so I guess it really does happen to us all, embarrassing all the same - still, no real harm done - we've a keel band on the front which protects it real well - just a couple of scratches/chips on the gelcoat.

Tried to get it to do it again but all seemed fine - anyone any ideas...?

Re: gear selection

if thats a 2004 it should still be in warranty. Don't attempt to fix it-get the mariner techs to do it. Sounds like an issue with cables/control box.

Re: gear selection

Soon as it happened I had it straight round to local mariner dealers - trouble is they couldn't replicate it. Asked local buddies - all we can think of, seeing it ain't been used for a couple of months is something ain't moving as it should. Short term gonna be a bit wary and see what happens and if it develops again.

Anyway, gel coats scratches patched up & filled OK - may just be one of those things - put it down to experience and all that.

And a Microplus eh..! My first boat, many fond memories...

Re: gear selection

I did think about getting something bigger but the 500 is just the right size not to have to pay harbour dues-the harbour comissioners see anything under 5.5m as a tender.

I suspect you won't see the problem again now.
